From Thursday, January 4, 2007, through Saturday, January 6, ADS will hold its next annual meeting at the Hilton in Anaheim, California, hosted as usual by the Linguistic Society of America.
Free lunch! All students who attend the annual meeting and are current ADS members will be guests at the Annual Luncheon. Reservations must be made by November 30 with Executive Secretary Allan Metcalf.
Location: According to the hotel website, slightly rearranged: “The Hilton Anaheim is colorfully contemporary, with that California style. Soft pastels and earth tones contrasted with colorful bed spreads capture the spirit of California. Floor to ceiling picture windows in each room allow commanding views of either Disneyland, the pool, sundecks or the surrounding area.”
Most important for our purposes, there is high-speed wireless Internet, and a Starbucks in the hotel.
ADS and LSA members will qualify for a special reduced room rate. The rate and reservation procedures will be announced later.
Monday, August 14 is the deadline for proposals for 20-minute presentations. All you need is a title and an abstract of 150 to 300 words. Send it via e-mail to Executive Secretary Allan Metcalf at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). If you need to use the postal service instead of e-mail, send four copies of the abstract, with your name on an accompanying letter but not on the abstract, to Allan Metcalf, English Dept., MacMurray College, Jacksonville Illinois 62650-2590. Presenters must be current members of the American Dialect Society. Audio-visual equipment: An LCD projector, as well as an overhead projector, will be available for all presentations. (You will need to bring your own computer and connectors for the LCD.) If you will need other equipment such as a tape player or CD player, please say so when you send your proposal. Scheduling: For 2007, the schedule of sessions will be a little different than in the past. The Executive Council and Words of the Year nominations will take place on Thursday, leaving room for more sessions on Friday and Saturday. If you have a preference for day or time of your presentation, please indicate that when you send your proposal. We cannot guarantee the time you prefer, but the committee will try to accommodate you. This is the tentative schedule: Thursday, January 4: Executive Council and Annual Business Meeting in the early afternoon. Program session at 4 p.m. New Words Committee meeting to nominate Words of the Year at 5:15. Friday, January 5: Program sessions starting at 8:30, 11, 2, and 3:45. Words of the Year vote at 5:30, followed by the Bring-Your-Own-Book reception. Saturday, January 6: Program sessions starting at 8:30 and 10:30. Annual Luncheon at 12:15. Program sessions at 2 and 4 p.m. Proposals will be judged anonymously by a committee chaired by William A. Kretzschmar, Jr., ADS President Elect. If your proposal is accepted, you’ll be asked for an abstract of no more than 200 words for the LSA program. Teaching panel: The ADS Committee on Teaching will sponsor a panel at the annual meeting. We invite proposals for 20-minute talks that address topics related to teaching American dialects and linguistic diversity.
