Subject: sad news.

I am sorry to report that Bob Howren (former chair of linguistics at Univ.

North Carolina at Chapel Hill) died suddenly of a heart attack Friday

afternoon. He had been gliding in western NC; apparently landed the glider

fine, stepped out, collapsed and could not be revived. I am told that Bob

explicitly did not want a standard public memorial service and that there

will be none. There may be a small private gathering for family and close

friends.

His wife's (Phyllis) address is 402 Ransom St., Chapel Hill , NC

27516.

Those who have studied Ocracoke dialect will rember that Bob wrote a landmark

early study on Outer Banks pronunciation.
