I was just contacted by someone researching Thoreau and Walden. He

asked about the meaning of "country seat" in chapter 2, wondering

whether that meant "outhouse."

I don't have the text, but I suspect it means "a house in the country":

"seat" as in "base of operations", cf. "seat of government", "county [no

R] seat" = 'capital of the county govt.'
