The group of use seemed to believe that it originated in basketball. In high school leagues it is a courtesy (perhaps a rule?) for a player to volunteer him- or herself as having committed the foul by raising a hand. This is often accompanied by the phrase "my bad." Anecdotal, unprovable as source, but possible. Also: Compare with "I go" in volleyball, shorthand for "I got it." Grant Barrett gbarrett[AT SYMBOL GOES HERE]dfjp.com
