Even on English-language menus, the French name is used. I grew up in southern Virginia, and as someone previously mentioned, they are referred to as snaps or snap beans. One of my greatest childhood memories is sitting on the front porch on Monday afternoons with my grandfather snapping 'em snap beans while he smoked his cigars while my grandmother washed the clothes with Rinso and cooked cabbage. Smell goes beyond the senses, you know. (Last thought by Tony Kushner, not me!)
