Subject: Good morning (was "thank you")

On the same note (perhaps) I remember as a teenager being put off by having

to say "Good morning" or "morning" when you'd see your family for the first

time after waking up. I thought it was dumb to have to say this phrase which

didn't make sense (Tolkien, in the first chapter of the Hobbit has a nice

little piece on the various meanings of Good morning", or is it Good Day?) so

I always said plain old "Hi" and still do today. I've found it interesting

that some people are willing to give a Hi back to me, but others insist on

saying Good morning.
