I, too, only knew "Indian giver" as somebody who gave something but didn't really mean it, and later wanted it back. I must admit, though, that when I learned it as a child (sometime between 6 & 10) I wasn't sure whether it was "Indians" who did that, or somebody who did that _to_ Indians. Yes, I have heard "so do me something." I grew up in NYC in the 1950s. The sense I have is that it's like "So sue me." Rima
