I remember that in the late 60s Chicanos objected to the hyphen in 'Mexican-American', saying they didn't appreciate being labeled as hyphenated Americans. It seemed to me that these comments, along with the general tendency to omit the old-fashioned hyphen, speeded up acceptance of lots of hyphenless forms in print media by the early 1970s. Now it's rare for a student to know the old rules of hyphenation of compound modifiers etc. DMLance
