He was raised in central Pennsylvania and did grad work at Penn State. I always assumed it was the Penn State put down on Pitt (Univ of Pttg), the arch rival. I think you are correct that it was a beer add with this beer being the end-all. Indiana is certainly close enough to have a rivalry with Pitt or at least advertizing from Pttg. I can investigate further if you like.
