I hear the affricate pronc often myself, although I believe I say it with

a fricative.

Could this be a result of spelling?

A stereotype of Hispanic English uses this pronunciation. Could there be

some influence here?

Or is some strictly phonological mechanism at work?

It seems to me a while back there was a discussion of where [s] is

becoming an affricate in the middle of words, too, but I can't remember

the example.
