I thought it was reasonably clear from context that I was speaking _subjectively_. To _me_, a Montrealer speaking English has less of an accent -- that is, sounds much closer to Hudson Valley/Upstate New York -- than someone from New York City (or nearby areas of New Jersey and Long Island). This includes Francophone Montrealers. I would expect that anyone doing a _professional_ dialect study would have a better-trained ear than mine.
