I especially like the first chapter on what people, from das Volk to Jesperson and beyond, have said historically about gendered lg. diffs. For a more general text, both in terms of audience interest and covering a wider range of socioling. topics, including more on discourse, lg. socialization, lg. and power, etc, I like Tannen's *You just don't understand* for undergrads.
