We are forgetting the difference between nouns and proper nouns,

especially trade names. Does anyone want to make a case for Webster's

including `Toys' and `Us' with a backward `s' and `r' as an

alternate spelling for `are'? The only common usage of the spelling

of theatre that I see is in proper names.

Reading today's NY Times I noted that although the theatres

themselves use the -re ending, the Times editorial policy seems to be

to use -er in its copy.
