Jesse's plug reminds us that we have great new reference works. After basking

in the "guy" entry he cited in the _Random House Historical Dictionary of

American Slang_, I thought of turning to _DARE_ Volume 2, and there found a

most interesting entry for "-guys" suff HI [=Hawaii], citing in turn such

sources as _American Speech_ 58.69 (1983) : "In Hawaiian Creole . . . _Guys_

is simply the plural morpheme, replacing older _them_ or _dem_."
