Poor monkey! It rings a bell, but in a different form:
An old joke (circa the 1970s) in which the husband sends a note to the wife
(via their child) inviting her back to bed. In it he pens a bit of doggerel
on a circus theme. Her response is something along the lines of, "take down
your tent, put out the light, the monkey had a haemmorhage, there'll be no
show tonight!"
