<br>A week or so ago, there was a comment on "Brooklynese" pronuncations of
<br>'third', 'join', etc.  The initial thread lay there lifeless, not even able
<br>to aspire to b---thongness.  Other items in the query elicited some
<br>discussion, but not Bunkerisms like 'terlet'.

<br>By chance, my eye caught something in, of all places, AMERICAN SPEECH.  In
<br>the fall 1996 issue, p. 331, David Schulman cites this poem:

<br>
<br>I thought the winner had been found
<br>  The day I heard a woman make
<br>The butcher cut her off a pound
