Thanks for the references. Hans Marchand has always amazed me with
his scholarly depth, but he is largely ignored when leading names are
mentioned. Don has forgotten his linguistic roots: in Texas and elsewhere
in the South and South Midland (I'm not trying to pick a fight here), the
vowel of can't is /aey/ or is raised by the following glide to /ey/. As
the nuclei are different even under stress, there ain't no confusion.
