The Dictionary of American Regional English has an entry for hoick, 'to
hoist or snatch up; to hook.' This is in the English Dialect Dictionary,
meaning 'to hoist, lift up.' DARE's only examples are from Faulkner, so I'm
glad to get your evidence from outside the South.
