A Dictionary of the Old West, by Peter Watts (Wings Books, 1977), has this

entry on 'cayuse':



Also _kiuse_. Originally a word for the wild horse of the Northwest and

named for the Cayuse Indians; it soon became a general term among the cowmen

of the northern ranges for a cow horse of mustang descent. Weseen 1934 says: "

An Indian pony." Ramon Adams 1944 adds that in later years the word was

applied contemptuously to scrub-horses (Dunn 1886; Berret and van den Bark

1942). DMLance
