Mencken's American Language cites references to a "whoosher," but admits
that that seems far-fetched. Then: "Beyond North America, the most
reliable etymology connects it with hoozer, a Cumberland dialect term
applied to 'anything unusually large.'"

There's a gap there somewhere, maybe a Cumberland one.
