Safire's _Southern Literary Messenger_ citation (I think it was 1839, I
don't have the information handy) was supplied by me also, so Safire and I
both already have it before the Civil War. But I'm sure it goes back
centuries before that, I just gave Safire what I was able to find in a
half-hour of research (he was under deadline, as usual).
